How Does Social Media Affect Teens?

By June 15, 2017 No Comments

When the Internet happened, it changed everything. Today, it is very hard to imagine life without the Internet. The Internet can be a great thing, but it can also be a very bad thing. This depends on how you use it. Now, let’s take a look at some advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet and social networking for teens.

Indirect Communication With Another Person

Today, teens really know how to keep themselves busy. When they are communicating with one another, they are doing it via text messages most of the time. This can have a negative impact on them because they are not looking at each other, but at a screen. That is because they don’t get to see each other’s facial expressions and body language. That is something that can be called a nonverbal disabled context. If teens don’t relate to other people in person, there is a chance that they will grow up to be adults who are anxious about talking.

Stalking

While using this new technology, a person is never really alone. Teens are able to share what they are doing using different social media apps. Also, they are never really safe from receiving too many text messages. There is also a possibility of someone stalking them. And when you think about it, that can be very scary. There are times when some teens initiate a relationship using a social media app. Teens never really get a break from these relationships, which can produce anxiety. Everyone wants to spend some time alone every once in a while. And not having that may be a reason for becoming anxious.

Teens May Have a Feeling of Being Ignored

It is very easy to feel ignored on social media. Teens tend to have that feeling when they don’t get a response from their family member or friend fast enough. And it doesn’t actually have to mean that the person you’re trying to reach is ignoring you. Maybe they are just busy or something like that.

How Can Parents Help

Parents should talk to their kids about what they are interested in. It could be anything from sports to music. Basically, it could be anything that gives your kids confidence. They are going to be happy when they find out something that they are successful at. Also, many of these activities involve interacting with people in person, and that is a great thing.

Always make sure that as a parent you know what your kids are doing online. It does not mean you need to check every step they take. Just keep working on a good communication and relation with your kids so they can trust you. Keep up with the latest trends so you can follow up on your kids and educate them where needed.
